Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne announced that the government has accelerated measures to issue Digital National Identity Cards (NDI) to replace all physical identity cards currently in circulation within the next few years.

Speaking on the national digitalization strategy, Deputy Minister Weeraratne stated that the target for releasing the first batch of Digital IDs remains within the remaining months of this year.

"We have given special priority to the digital economy initiative," Weeraratne noted. "Following the initial release this year, we plan to roll out full Digital ID issuance by August next year. From that milestone, we plan to transition the country's 17 million citizens from the existing identity card system to the new digital framework over a two-year period."
