Ampara District Member of Parliament Kaveendiran Kodeeswaran (ITAK) warned in Parliament yesterday that certain opportunistic political elements are turning an administrative issue at the Kalmunai North Base Hospital into a communal divide for personal political gain, urging the Minister of Health to intervene closely.

Speaking during the parliamentary debate on regulations under the Import and Export Control Act on Tuesday, the lawmaker addressed the recent controversy surrounding dress code policies at the medical facility.

"While a permanent resolution to the uniform issue at the Kalmunai Base Hospital is pending, we express our gratitude to the Minister of Health for providing an interim arrangement," MP Kodeeswaran stated. "Certain bankrupt politicians and elements seeking political regime change are attempting to stoke communal divisions over the wearing of official uniforms versus the Abaya."

He noted that recent controversies in the Eastern Province were exacerbated by former MPs, political figures, and social media activists engaged in divisive rhetoric that threatens TamilMuslim relations.

"An administrative matter was intentionally transformed into a political and communal conflict by individuals prioritizing their self-interest and desperate political standing," he said. "This administration assumed office promising to unite all three major communities and treat everyone equally. However, in technical matters, the law must take its course."

Addressing the role of hospital officials, MP Kodeeswaran clarified that Dr. Sukunan was not present when the initial administrative decisions were made, and that the acting administration merely followed existing statutory frameworks. "The law applies equally to everyone. The hospital management committee acted strictly in accordance with administrative guidelines and circulars regarding standard attire for nursing and healthcare staff, not out of communal prejudice. Healthcare staff are free to wear cultural attire outside duty specifications, but hospital circulars must be maintained by the Ministry," he concluded.
