The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) warned of severe legal action against parents neglecting child care and minors involved in cybercrimes, following an unexpected surge in reported child abuse and negligence cases in recent months.

Head of the NCPA Legal Enforcement Division, Attorney-at-Law Sajeevani Abeykoon, revealed that monthly complaints jumped from the usual 600–700 range to over 1,100 in June and July, largely concerning physical abuse, emotional neglect, and abandonment.

Expressing concern over digital risks, Abeykoon noted that boys aged 14 to 18 are increasingly becoming perpetrators by sharing explicit photographs of peers.

She emphasized that minors over 12 can face legal prosecution, while negligent parents face 2 to 10 years imprisonment under Section 308 of the Penal Code for child cruelty.
