The Colombo High Court has scheduled the full trial of the money laundering case against Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and his grandmother Daisy Forest, for August 31.

The case was taken up on the 16th before Colombo High Court Judge Rashmi Singappuli. During the proceedings, State Counsel Oswald Perera requested the court to fix a date for the trial

The State Counsel indicated that the prosecution intends to present certain amendments to the indictment on the next trial date and will formally declare its stance regarding the second defendant, Daisy Forest. After considering the submissions, the Judge postponed the case to August 31.

The Attorney General has filed three indictments against the defendants under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. They stand accused of committing a punishable offense by depositing over LKR 59 million of unexplained wealth into fixed deposit accounts across three private banks between March 31, 2009, and December 12, 2013.

Ex-IGP Wickramaratne Dies of Shotgun Wounds; Suspect Suicide

Two Police teams have been appointed to investigate the death of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne, who was found dead, yesterday morning, the Police said. Police Media Spokesman, told that initial findings suggest the former IGP may have taken his own life using a firearm at his residence in Thalahena, Malabe.

The former IGP was rushed to Mulleriyawa Hospital following the incident, but doctors pronounced him dead.

Police Media Spokesman, said that former IGP C.D. Wickremaratne is assumed to have died in a suspected suicide.

He further said that preparations are underway to conduct the postmortem and magisterial inquiries into the death, while statements are also to be recorded with regard to the incident.

The Police Spokesman added that the appointed Police teams are to conduct a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
