Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage, the official media spokesperson for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has raised serious suspicions regarding the sudden death of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne. Gamage questioned how authorities and media outlets could definitively label the incident a suicide before comprehensive forensic and criminal investigations were completed.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headquarters on Friday, Gamage warned that the country is witnessing a dangerous, recurring trend where mysterious political homicides are routinely written off as suicides.

"We are currently living in a deeply alarming environment where defendants, witnesses, and key officials connected to highly controversial high-profile cases are dying under mysterious circumstances," Gamage stated. He cited past examples, pointing to the unexplained deaths of a senior state official connected to a 2.5 million rupee Treasury fraud case, as well as Kapila Chandrasena, a primary defendant in the controversial Airbus procurement scandal. In all these instances, he noted, the official narrative rushed to conclude that the deaths were suicides.

Gamage expressed deep concern over the handling of former IGP Wickramaratne's sudden death at his Athurugiriya residence. He asked who authorized the premature announcement of suicide to the public while the police cordons were still active and primary evidence was unexamined. "There is a growing, toxic culture in our political landscape where suspected assassinations are seamlessly repackaged as self-inflicted deaths," Gamage remarked.

He concluded by asserting that the current political and law enforcement climate is fundamentally flawed and lacks transparency, urging the public to remain highly skeptical of such convenient explanations.
