In a departure from traditional recruitment methods, the Sri Lankan government has launched a subject-targeted recruitment drive to address the severe teacher shortage plaguing the national school system. Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Chandana Aberathna announced that the new program will specifically target immediate subject vacancies.

Elaborating on the initiative, Minister Aberathna noted that Sri Lanka has not carried out systematic teacher recruitment since 2021, leading to prolonged vacancies in core subjects such as Mathematics. Under the new model, the government will strictly recruit individuals with specialized qualifications in those specific subjects.

"In accordance with the Teacher Service Minute, a competitive examination was held last May, attracting over 180,000 qualified applicants, including graduates. The evaluation of exam scripts is nearing completion," the Minister said. He confirmed that based on current budgetary allocations and approvals, approximately 30,000 teachers will be urgently integrated into the school system before the end of 2026. He added that the Cabinet is also actively addressing long-standing grievances within the Principal Service to provide rapid solutions.
