The Pottuvil to Polikandy (P2P) People's Movement has issued a comprehensive statement expressing its profound grief, respect, and gratitude following the passing of the legendary South Indian film director, Iyakkunar Imayam Bharathiraja, celebrating his cinematic genius and unwavering defense of Tamil rights.

In a joint statement, the President of the P2P Movement,   Velan Swamigal, alongside Reverend Father T. Joseph Mary, underscored that Bharathiraja was far more than an acclaimed filmmaker; he was a vital cultural icon. The movement noted that his cinematic masterpieces brought the authentic rustic heritage, complex socio-cultural realities, and profound emotional depth of Tamil society to the silver screen, serving as a cultural warrior across generations.

The P2P leadership specifically lauded Bharathiraja’s fierce, uncompromising voice regarding the political rights, distinct identity, and self-determination struggles of the Tamil people, particularly the Tamil population of Eelam. The statement recalled his historic journey to the north of Sri Lanka, where he personally met with the national leadership of the liberation struggle and famously declared to the world, "I have witnessed the peerless leader of the Tamil race." The movement stated that the loss of a cultural heavyweight with such an enduring passion for Eelam liberation is a catastrophic blow to Tamils worldwide.

"He sowed the very scent of the soil onto the celluloid screen, carrying the soul of the Tamil language to the global stage," the joint message read, adding that his cinematic legacy and radical thoughts will continue to inspire future generations. The P2P Movement offered its heartfelt revolutionary tributes (Pugazh Vanakkam) and extended its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and millions of grieving film enthusiasts globally.
