During the meeting held on Thursday (29) between Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and representatives of Tamil national political parties, various issues were extensively discussed, including the matter of a Tamil common candidate and calls for an election boycott.

During the meeting, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval expressed that he would not comment on how Tamil national political parties should act in this presidential election. However, he stated that he believes the best decision would be for everyone to unite and use the Tamil people's votes in a meaningful way.

A meeting between Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who is on a visit to Sri Lanka, and representatives of Tamil national political parties was held yesterday, Thursday, at the Indian High Commissioner's residence in Colombo.

Former Member of Parliament Mavai Senathirajah, Members of Parliament S. Sritharan and M.A. Sumanthiran, representing the Tamil National Alliance, Selvam Adaikalanathan, Member of Parliament and leader of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF), and Dharmalingam Sithadthan, Member of Parliament and leader of the People's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), along with Selvarajah Kajendren, Member of Parliament representing the Tamil National People's Front, were invited to participate in this meeting.

Accordingly, although Sritharan, Sumanthiran, Selvam Adaikalanathan, and Kajendren participated in the meeting, Sritharan had to leave at the beginning of the meeting due to an overseas trip.

During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on issues including a political solution for the Tamil people and the situation regarding the presidential election. At this time, Selvarajah Kajendren, Member of Parliament representing the Tamil National People's Front, explained to Ajit Doval that, based on the past 75 years of experience, it has become clear that the Tamil people cannot live under a unitary system. He also stated that, since the 13th Amendment to the Constitution has entirely failed, it cannot be a means for the Tamil people to move forward.

Therefore, Kajendren stated that he rejects both the 13th Amendment and the draft of the new constitution prepared in 2015, which includes a unitary system. He requested India’s assistance in achieving a federal system with the right to self-determination for Tamils in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

Similarly, the meeting also discussed the Tamil National People's Front’s policy of calling for a boycott of the upcoming presidential election and the decision of the Tamil Common Structure to field a common candidate on behalf of the Tamil people in the election.

Ajit Doval, after inquiring about these differing stances and the Tamil voting percentages, advised that it would be best if everyone stood united in this presidential election and used the Tamil people’s votes in a meaningful way. He further mentioned that he would not dictate what decisions Tamil national political parties should make, but emphasized the need to consider how the votes cast in such an election would impact democracy and act accordingly.
