In a meeting held on Monday (26th), the Tamil pothu katamaipu resolved that any invitations from Southern Sri Lanka presidential candidates should be met with a unified decision and that all members should act accordingly.

With the ninth presidential election of the country set to take place on September 21st, the Tamil pothu katamaipu—formed by Tamil nationalist political parties and civil society representatives—has fielded former Member of Parliament P. Ariyanethiran as their candidate.

In this context, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is contesting as an independent candidate in this election, extended an invitation to the Tamil pothu katamaipu for discussions through a letter over the weekend. However, the Tamil pothu katamaipu stated that this letter had only reached the telo .  and the Democratic Fighters Party, while other parties had not received it.

In light of this situation, the Tamil pothu katamaipu convened a meeting at 11:30 AM on Monday (26th) at the candidate’s office in Jaffna to discuss the approach to be taken regarding invitations from Southern Sri Lanka presidential candidates. The meeting continued until 3:00 PM with extensive discussions on this matter.

As a result, it was decided that in the future, any invitation for discussions from Southern Sri Lanka presidential candidates should be discussed collectively by all parties involved in the Tamil pothu katamaipu, and a unified decision should be made, which all parties should adhere to.

The meeting unanimously resolved that if Southern Sri Lanka presidential candidates extend an invitation, the entire Tamil pothu katamaipu should either accept the invitation and attend the meeting or reject the invitation and clearly state the reasons for doing so.
