President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran has expressed satisfaction with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights' report on Sri Lanka's current human rights situation, noting that it covers a wide range of issues. He emphasized the need for a strong new resolution on Sri Lanka at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is set to begin in September.

The 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council is scheduled to start on September 9th. In this context, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, released a comprehensive report last Thursday on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka, including recent trends that could severely impact the country's fundamental rights and freedoms.

The report calls for the newly elected government, following the elections, to implement an inclusive national agenda that addresses the root causes of the conflict. It also urges for structural reforms and constitutional amendments to strengthen democracy, ensure power-sharing, and enhance accountability and reconciliation.

M.A. Sumanthiran, a Member of Parliament for the Tamil National Alliance and a President's Counsel, expressed his satisfaction with the content of the new report, stating that although the report could have been stronger, it already includes a wide range of issues, which is reassuring.

He also pointed out that the current resolution, which includes the "Sri Lanka Accountability Project," passed by the UN Human Rights Council, is set to expire in September. Therefore, it is crucial to pass a new resolution to continue the work under this project or to extend the current resolution with stronger provisions.

Sumanthiran emphasized the importance of ensuring that a strong new resolution on Sri Lanka is adopted during the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in September or that the existing resolution is extended with more robust components.
