Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has requested Tamil political party representatives not to field a Tamil common candidate in the upcoming presidential election, as it could cause a setback for him by dividing the Tamil votes.
With the ninth presidential election set to take place on September 21st, the Tamil pothu kattamaipu has fielded P. Ariyanendran, a former Member of Parliament as the Tamil common candidate on behalf of the Tamil people.
The Tamil pothu kattamaipu has previously stated that this common candidate is being fielded as a symbol of the demands and aspirations of the Tamil people. They also mentioned that they are willing to engage in discussions with the main candidates in this presidential election if they approach them with a guarantee of a collective solution for the Tamil people.
In line with this, the independent presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe had invited the Tamil pothu kattamaipu for a meeting. Representatives of PLOTE, TELO, , who are part of the collective, met with Ranil out of respect and discussed matters. The following day, they also responded to an invitation from Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and met him at the Opposition Leader's Office in Colombo.
During this meeting, Sajith Premadasa requested the Tamil political representatives not to field a Tamil common candidate, expressing concern that it might divide the Tamil votes he could receive, causing a setback for him in the election.
However, the Tamil political representatives, who clarified their objective in fielding a common candidate, informed him that they could not withdraw from this decision.
