Sivasakthi Aanandan, former Member of Parliament, expressed confidence that Arithanendran, the Tamil common candidate in this election, would receive 50% of the 1.2 million votes in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
He made this statement while addressing the media after a discussion held on Sunday (25th) at a public meeting house in Vavuniya, which was attended by representatives of public organizations and civil society representatives from Vavuniya.
He further commented:
"For the past eight years, in the presidential elections, Tamil people have consistently voted for candidates from southern Sri Lanka. However, none of the presidents in power have provided any solutions for the Tamil people or addressed the basic issues faced by those affected by the war.
Based on this, we have fielded a Tamil common candidate. Our request is that all Tamil-speaking people living in the North and East, as well as those living outside these regions, support this candidate.
Election campaigns have been launched in all districts. There are more than 1.2 million Tamil people living in the Northern and Eastern provinces. We have started efforts to secure more than 50% of the votes.
We firmly believe that in this election, there is a political awakening and change among the Tamil people. We expect that 50% of the people will vote.
In reality, the Tamil people have had a national ethnic issue for a long time. None of the presidents elected by the Tamil people have solved the national ethnic issue. We aim to convey the message that until this issue is resolved, Tamil people will not vote for any Sinhala candidates from the South.
Furthermore, the international community, with the help of many countries, ended this war. After the war ended, the international community assured that a solution would be found for the problems of the Tamil people.
It has been 15 years since the war ended, but the international community has not taken any steps to resolve the issues of the Tamil people, and the Sri Lankan government has also made no efforts in this regard. Therefore, the Tamil people continue to face a national ethnic problem, and the issues of those affected by the war remain unresolved.
We are anticipating a new political change."
The discussion was also attended by representatives from the Democratic Fighters' Party, including media spokesperson K. Thulasi, business leaders, political party leaders, and representatives from civil organizations.
